Augmented Reality Art Show and Scavenger Hunt

This project was organized by Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation for the Scottsdale Canal Convergence yearly art festival, with a focus on sustainability, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), and Arizona's native flora and fauna. Festival-goers were instructed to download Boston-based company Hoverlay's augmented reality app, which guided them to five locations through a series of hints.

I managed the collaboration between various groups and components to ensure the project was completed on time. This included logistics for welding, electrical systems, and pedestal construction, as well as managing deadlines, materials, and the cohesiveness of each totem. Serving as the sole leadership team member present throughout the summer, I maintained communication, supported Saguaro High School robotics and art students in their efforts, and oversaw project management for both the totems’ construction and the scavenger hunt hints.

Not pictured here is the Augmented Reality component—cartoon character versions of the desert-themed totems. As users approached a totem, the character would appear in the Hoverlay AR app, introducing a riddle that served as a clue to the next totem.

The completed totems now reside permanently at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Arizona, serving as a lasting addition to the campus’s art collection.

An Introduction to the Totems

The physical components of the AR scavenger hunts were four totems representing Arizona-native flora or fauna. Each totem stands on a solar-powered, sustainable pedestal made of repurposed steel from a City of Scottsdale scrap facility that was constructed by the Saguaro High School robotics team, Sabercat Robotics Team 4146. The metal armatures of the sculptures were created by resident artist Bobby Zokaites, and then decorated with slump-fired glass pieces and ceramics created by the Saguaro High School sculpture class students.
